There are plenty of options for cheap outdoor wedding venues. By and large your options will boil down to one of the following:
- Public Land
- Friend or Relative’s Privately Owned Land
Now that’s not to say you can’t get a nice golf course wedding for a good deal… that’s completely possible! But first, let’s take a look at some other options.
Cheap Outdoor Wedding Venues
Did you know you can rent your local park? Most cities allow for a park to be rented, either in full or in part for a relatively nominal fee. Look to book your date no less than 60 to 120 days(2-4 months) out though, so plan early! The city doesn’t usually supply water nor electricity for you, so keep that in mind when entertaining the idea of going with a public space.
More on public spaces…
Another valid option is looking into your city, or a neighboring city’s historical properties to see if they are able to be rented for weddings. While not all of them are, a fair amount are, and wedding venue rentals can be had much cheaper than say a privately owned and rented mansion. Beaches are also on this list, some public beaches can be rented for weddings! That means your dream wedding on the shore may not be out of reach… I’ll hold while you wipe your tears of joy!
The single most effective way to find what is available in your area when it comes to using public facilities for weddings is to view the city site for your city or the city you’re looking to be married in. That cute town you passed a year ago on a quick long weekend trip with your significant other? If they don’t have a website, there’s definitely a phone number to call the city parks department and get all the information you’ll need!
What can’t be stressed enough is this: DON’T JUST ASSEMBLE AT A PUBLIC SPOT AND TRY AND GET MARRIED AND HAVE A RECEPTION. The city frowns upon this, and generally even if there aren’t permits required, they like to know what’s going on. Let’s put it this way, would you rather have made the calls to get your event ok’d or have your big day broken up and ruined?
Friend or Relative’s Privately Owned Land
This is where it can really get affordable! Looking to have that oh-so-adorable-slash-super-trendy barn chic wedding you assembled on Pinterest? If you have a family member, friend, or even friend of a friend – chances are that dream can be a reality. Chances also are that it probably won’t cost you much more than asking them, and an invitation – although they may appreciate some dinner and help cleaning up when you do have your wedding – natch.
Maybe you have a friend of a friend who has a nice house overlooking the beach, or with some form of an ocean view? This can work in your favor – less sand in every place imaginable – and you may be able to ask them nicely if you can host a small wedding there, and they may oblige the same.
Now about those golf course/country club/mansion wedding venues at a deal…
First and foremost – start your search early! Keep seasons in mind and know that the more extreme (hot or cold) months, if you can bear it, can net you a discount on an outdoor wedding venue. The best part about these is that they typically have a beautiful permanent gazebo for the ceremony and a choice between an outdoor reception or use of indoor facilities for that portion of your event. Sometimes giving up a more ideal month can save you tons and you still have your wedding at your dream venue. Another tip is to just ask for a discount! I know, I know – you’re thinking “I came all this way for a tip saying – just ask for a discount?!” Honestly though, it is worth a shot – a simple, but polite “any chance you can bring that down a little?” or “is that the best you can do?” can go far. If you have the option, you may ask about paying in cash, to see if that will help too. If the wedding venue knows you’re all in, they may find a little wiggle room to help you out. Another “hidden savings” with choosing a golf course venue, country club venue, or mansion is that in some instances, they provide catering. Making your big day almost all inclusive. If they do provide catering, the cost that they quote you will probably be higher than you’d imagine, but once you factor in what it would be if you had to get catering from a preferred vendor – the savings could be in the thousands!
